December 2008 The observatory had a dedication of its Space Shuttle Tire. The tire is part of the NASA shuttle decommissioning program and is on extended loan from NASA. This tire is now an important part of the McCarthy Observatory, because of its mission history and signifigance to astronomy. This particular mission saw the Hubble Space Telescope servicing and updates in February 1997. The connection of the Shuttle and the Hubble Telescope and astronomy to the McCarthy Observatory as a public outreach program was irresistable and too good to pass up. Thankfully our member Bill Cloutier was able to secure this wonderful piece of history for the observatory.
