The Mission of the John J. McCarthy Observatory is to further science literacy. With the great appeal of Astronomy, it is a natural tool for creating scientific curiosity and reinforcing interest and skills in science.

Starting at the local level, the all-volunteer staff of McCarthy Observatory will do as much as possible to help excite people, especially our K-12 students, to the joys of science and related fields of mathematics and technology. Our goal is to provide ongoing support as a responsible and reliable community resource for science education.

The definition of science literacy used by the McCarthy Observatory team comes from the American Association for the Advancement of Science publication Science for All Americans, ISBN: 0195067711, F. J. Rutherford & A. Ahlgren, Oxford University Press, 1990.
